I got them pierced into my skin, over and over, with a thousand needle stabs, for hundreds and hundreds of dollars. A lot of pain, a lot of sleepless nights because it was hard to lie on my back, with the bandages that covered the new designs.

But, it was worth it. Now the lines of my body fade away when people stare. They notice the black birds more than they notice my wrong, pale human flesh. They notice what is real, instead of the lie.

From the distance, my hair looks like a crow in flight.
